Purchase beer, drinks & food Play It Again Jam Official Link: www.TennesseeConcerts.com/jam The Play It Again Jam Brings Musicians From Past Nashville Bands Besides having players that have played with Robert Palmer, Peter Frampton, Rick Derringer, Taylor Swift, Odetta, Crystal Gayle, Jerry Reed, Sam & Dave, Wilson Pickett, Donna Fargo, JJ Cale, Leon Russell, Coven, Johnny Rodriguez, Jon Anderson (from Yes), The Four Tops, Slim Whitman, Toby Keith and many others, we have recently had the honor of having members of some of Nashville's favorite bands. Many musicians from Nashville bands from the 1960's, 1970's & 1980's have shown up at the jam lately. Ken Sanders from the Fairlanes came in August, played some drums and sang a few songs. The Fairlanes were a little before my time, going all the way back to the 1960's. They were well known in the Nashville music scene. See my newspaper clip of them playing at Nashville's famous Printers Alley. You can see a version of the Fairlanes and other popular bands on Chip Curley's Rock Combo's of the 60's. http://nashlinks.com/sixties.htm . Another band listed on Chip Curley's page are the Anglo Saxons. Rick Durrett played with them. He has played at several of the jams lately. Chip Curley himself came to the jam recently. Chip played in the 1960's band the Shadows among other bands. Chip has the most popular of the vintage Nashville websites on the internet. We recently had drummer Robert Kinsall from the Mercy Blues. You can find the Mercy Blues listed on Chip's Curley's Rock Combo's of Nashville 1970's http://nashlinks.com/seventies.htm. Donnie Winters from the Winters Brothers Band came to the jam in September. Donnie, the heart and soul of the Winters Brothers played some southern rock. He played the Marshall Tucker Band's Can't You See and Fire On The Mountain (written by George McCorkle from Marshall Tucker) with the help of his friend Earache. The Winters Brothers debut album received airplay with songs including I Can't Help It, Shotgun Rider, Sang Her Love Songs, and Smokey Mountain Log Cabin Jones. They played at the popular Charlie Daniels Band Volunteer Jam several times, Nashville's One For The Sun and even Farm Aid. I went to see them many times back in the day. See a picture of Donnie and myself above. I gave Donnie a video that I took of the Winters Brothers Band in the 1980's that included his late father Don Winters. Don Winters played with Marty Robbins for 14 years. I also gave Donnie a 1979 Winters Brothers Band video (with the late George McCorkle sitting in) at the Volunteer Jam. He later let me know that it was very emotional for him to watch these video's. Speaking of Donnie, he (and and his brother) went to grammer school with me (and rode the same school bus) in Nashville, although he was several years older than me. Mac Gayden and his wife Diane came to the last jam. I have seen Mac many times over the years, from his Barefoot Jerry days, up until his latest band Zenphonic with his daughter Oceana and son Mac Jr. See my video of Zenphonic at 3rd & Lindsley last year at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fTTtlKAljTo I was also at Mac's concert in 2004 at Nashville's Belcourt Theater. Mac goes all the way back to the 1960's Nashville band Charlie McCoy & The Escorts. He also later had his own band Mac Gayden & Skyboat. You can see a video of him with Area Code 615 perform on the Johnny Cash Show on Barefoot Jerry's home page at http://www.barefootjerry.com. He wrote Everlasting Love which has been a hit sixteen times, and discovered Robert Knight, who had the original hit. He also wrote She Shot A Hole In My Soul and many other cool songs. Mac didn't perform at the jam but his grandson's band "Verb The Adjective Noun" played. See a picture of Diane & Mac Gayden at the Jam. And I can't leave out our own Gary Allen. He played in many 1970's Nashville bands including Lightning Kite and Push. He went on to play with Grand Ole Opry star Stonewall Jackson, then the Charlie Daniels Band & J.J. Cale. He has gold & platinum records. I first saw Gary play at a Black Oak Arkansas concert at the Municipal Auditorium with new bands (at the time) the Marshall Tucker Band & the Charlie Daniels Band around 1974. This show was said to be the loudest concert ever in Nashville at that time. Gary went on to play on Souths Gonna Do It Again, Long Haired Country Boy and many others. I later saw Gary and a few other members from the original CDB play as Push at a local bar called Fanny's. Come and join Gary & myself (Pat Adams), along with band leader Walter Jowers and Ken Utterback from Pacific Gas & Electric for the Play It Again Jam every Sunday at the Elysian Inn in Nashville from 4:00-8:00pm. |
